3D Work

Connect. Disconnect.
This project dealt with connection and disconnection between humans. Focusing on folding, expanding, moving mechanisms, our object had to show the transition between the two. I chose to make a self defense-like claw, where when relaxed, the spikes would be relaxed as well. But when agitated, the curling of the fist would pull the claws upward for protection. The iridescent plexiglass material serves as a juxtaposition, something so dangerous and harmful is also beautiful and fantasy-like.

Name that Tune: Ziggy Stardust
For this project, we were assigned partners and given a song to create a CD package, CD art, T-shirt, poster, and package for. My partner Yubin and I were given “Ziggy Stardust” by David Bowie. We decided to create two concepts with this theme.

For our final project, we were asked to create a chair. I designed a chair for children that was comfortable and felt like a hug. The rounded shapes and fuzzy covering create a sense of comfort. Using no nails and screws, I used slotting together of wood pieces to create a stable chair.

Graphite .07
I decided to design a box for something that I always carry with me, my mechanical pencil. But this is no ordinary pencil, it allows you to easily change the eraser when gone and refill the lead. Since I always carry this pencil with me to class, I wanted to design a package that could be used to both sell the pencil initially and also be kept as a pencil case for future use, as it is both durable and appealing in design.

Personal Symbols: 2D to 3D

We were asked to design two symbols, one which described how others perceived us and the other that described how we saw ourselves. I decided to pick ambitious (left, self) and friendly (right, others).

We then had to translate these drawings into wire sculptures, Bristol paper models, plaster molds, and finally, based on a moodboard, a combination of linear and planer materials. I wanted to focus on transparencies, line, and reflections, drawing inspiration from ice, jellyfish and kintsugi pottery.

Exploring the Inbetween: Chinese Americans
Final Quilt Studio Project: Creating a memorial/exhibition that relates to memory
I focused on Chinese Americans and their upbringing, identity, and balance between Chinese and American cultures. I interviewed 110 Chinese Americans and collected their photos to create this quilt, and along with this, there is an audio clip of compiled interviews that was playing the night of our presentations.
